Tensions were high between Brian Wilson and other members of the band as Wilson, determined to create an album comparable to The Beatles' discs Rubber Soul and Revolver, pushed the band's music in new directions. Mike Love, however, felt that the Beach Boys would lose their core audience if the band continued to follow Brian's vision. The band eventually abandoned the album that they were in the midst of recording.  The legends surround that disc, entitled Smile, grew until it became possibly the most famous unreleased album in the history of popular music. While this show features just one song from the Smile sessions, Heroes and Villains. the efforts of Brian to redefine the band, can be seen in other songs such as Good Vibrations, recorded right before Smile, and God Only Knows, from Pet Sounds. Download this one to hear the Beach Boys at a critical moment in their history. -Original
