Kiss - The Black Box Interviews (Solo Albums Promo)

Kiss
The BLACK BOX Interview Tape (Promo for The Solo Albums 1978, a.k.a. "The KISS Bible")

This little black box is hard to find these days. It was sent out to selected radio stations across North America shortly before the release of the Solo Albums in September 1978. With the help of an included audio tape, radio stations were able to conduct interviews with the individual band members without any of them actually being present...

The tape features an introduction to each of the four albums followed by extensive answers from the KISS members to a handful of questions provided in a booklet. The guys are talking about the recordings, people they worked with, future plans and some more interesting topics. A song from each album completes the spoken sections.

Booklet B&W Scans Included
Encoded 128 Kbps MP3

The entire contents from the tape is digitized  into 41 titles:
1. Intro, 2.-4. Gene segment, 5. Song Radioactive, REMOVED 6.-12. Paul segment, 13. Song Hold Me Touch Me, REMOVED 14.-22. Peter segment, 23. Song Don't You Let Me Down, REMOVED 24.-39. Ace segment, 40. Song New York Groove, REMOVED 41. Outro.

Big Log

This is a four album set of vinyl broadcast discs used to distribute the King Biscuit Flower Hour to radio stations affiliates in the USA for weekly broadcasts. Long sought after by Zeppelin & Plant fans alike, only part of this short series has been available from the broadcast tapes until now. The quality you'll hear here surpasses that of previous "leaks" of the SBD material, especially the definition of the high frequencies.
Does anybody remember.... dynamics? The range on this recording is spectacular - nice and open - no clipping.

The only thing I did to this was meticulously remove any noticeable pops or crackles. I did NOT just run a generic pop filter on the entire set of audio, as that usually harms the recording in an unpleasant way.
This set runs as the broadcast did, with one exception: I removed all but one Honda Shadow commercial (they were all exactly the same and played at EVERY break). All other commercials are left in place. This entire transfer is precisely tracked so you can easily skip parts you don't want to hear. There are 43 tracks total, filling 3CDs:

01 - CD1 - 1984.01.29 - Part 1 - Bill Minkin - Introduction
02 - CD1 - 1984.01.29 - Part 1 - Honda Shadow

Also included are hi-res scans of one of the four records, the accompanying documentation - cue sheets, scripts and a letter to the radio station program directors from David Knight, the producer of the show.
This set was rescued from a record store by Krambo199 with real money. The album covers are plain white (since this set was meant to be played once for broadcast and discarded) and the price sticker from the record shop is intact. Without disclosing what he paid, let me assure you that Krambo199 is being very generous in offering this to the community for free - especially since it is so rare. From what I can tell, this is the first time it has been available in full, including the "D" sides that feature cuts mastered for broadcast in regular rotation, outside the King Biscuit show.-Orignal

A good soundboard with some slight hiss.

This is a great show from the second leg of the Who's Next 1971 US tour. The performance is probably one of the best of the year, the stage banter is silly as usual and the sound is pretty good. Not perfect for a soundboard recording but The Who soundboards from this era are very rare so this one is worth checking out. -Original

*This recording is purported to come from an FM Reel Master.  The sound quality is quite excellent, and this may very well be an appropriate lineage. The comparison to 'Smoking Blues' reveals that this recording is brighter and cleaner, to my ears. You may find that it's not an upgrade. -danlynch 2004-08-17.

- From a local review: "The Kiss concert had been viewed by many in the community as a possible crowd control problems, but none were witnessed inside. Instead, a youthful crowd cheered and shouted as one of the most bizarre groups in rock music went through an 80-minutes set with a maximum of flare" (Dyke Hendrickson, Portland Press Review, 7/29/79).
- The circulating AUD recording from this show is missing several songs.
- KISS briefly held the venue gross record, before being surpassed by a $113,791 Frank Sinatra concert in October (though he only played for 7,593 fans). -KissMonster.com

From a UNCIRCULATED master tape of KISS on the Crazy Nights Tour in Ft. Worth, Texas, Tarrant County Coliseum, with opening act Ted Nugent. Best I can remember, I didn't tape Ted, but I could be mistaken. I could not find the encore to this show, so either I didn't tape it, or it's on the flip side of the Nugent and I can't find the tape. Either way, here is the show, won't quite fit on one cd. A little rough as it was recorded with a Walkman, but it's better than nothing. -Original

This is a CD version of a tape recording made on September 22nd 1969 (by person(s) unknown) of a US radio DJ playing a tape of some early Glyn John’s mixes of Let It Be/Get Back tracks which were issued to some US radio stations in mid to late 1969.

NOTE: There is NO SUCH THING as a "Promo Acetate" of the 'Get Back' album, and it WAS NOT issued to any radio station anywhere. WE GOT TO STOP PERPETUATING THIS FALSEHOOD!!!
This is a tape of Glyn Johns' reference acetate that made its way to the US, where it was played on some "underground" FM stations (the first being WKBW-FM in Buffalo, New York).
A more complete version of this same tape of the radio broadcast on WBCN-FM is on "Posters, Incense And Strobe Candles". Most of it has been edited out on this CD. -BootlegZone

For this release, unlike others floating around, I have not used any noise reduction, but instead painstakingly de-clicked, de-popped, and de-crackled each track one-by-one, putting the integrity of the music above anything else - leaving what should be a very enjoyable listen, of what is a very important historical recording. I have also added all of the stereo elements that were missing from this acetate from the Yellow Dog disc (only a section of dialogue), some tracks are available in longer form in mono with extra studio chat, but I did not want to mix stereo and mono here, this is simply stereo only. I also took the liberty of pitch, phase and level correcting this disc, as well as undoing the peak limiting applied to the original disc. -bigozine2.com
